Ethics

The chemical engineering profession, to me, is a very delicate role. As one who assesses in detail each process and the equipment that performs the process in terms of it sustainability, safety, and efficiency. Thus, it is important to put utmost professionalism so that the ripple effect to those surrounding the plant would not be severely harmed.

The imposition of a code which shows the ethical conduct of a chemical engineer is to be faithfully known and applied upon work. Thus, shown in this category are artifacts that presents my knowledge and some application of ethical standards set for chemical engineers.

Understanding
Professional Ethics

Before applying the proper ethics of being a chemical engineer, it is necessary to dig through the theoretical knowledge on what professional ethics, how it works, and what needs to be done should there be dilemmas in the workplace. This was centered during our CHE4223 (Legal and Ethical Considerations in Chemical Engineering Practice) where the discussion emphasizes the act of professionalism in the chemical engineering industry in the Philippines and of the world. This class also taught about approaches on dealing with practical ethics that resolves a dilemma that cannot be decided based on a particular code.

One artifact on the assessment of my knowledge on professional ethics is an alignment matrix where the Presidential Decree No. 220 is related to the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) Code of Ethics based on the stipulated principles. This said decree presents the professional conduct regardless of what profession he/she is into. This includess Service to Others, Integrity and Objectivity, Professional Competence, Solidarity and Teamwork, Social & Civic Responsibility, Global Competitiveness, and Equality of All Professionals

To theoretically apply the Code of Ethics, we were tasked to rework a case study of an engineering dilemma/case by the Board of Ethical Review, collated by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) in USA. Applying the case on the Philippine setting, the use of the PIChE Code of Ethics was the base reference for the re-worked output. Here is the submitted case based on a Confidentiality dilemma of competing firms to which one was able to illegally access the competitor's plan to the client.

Finally, an oral report was done to share our thoughts on an assigned approach on resolving Moral Problems. Each groups is to make a 20-minute-maximum report on a particular approach assigned. In our case, we were to discuss on the third part of the Respect for Persons Approach which tackles on the rights of each person and its priority based on a set hierarchy. know more about it in this video.
